Below is my link to my self-reflection video! Getting to be a part of the organization is such an incredible opportunity as I have gotten to learn more about not only dementia, but also how Best Friends operates and it's founding.
It's been an awesome experience thus far to get to work with all of the different individuals. I am excited to see what new things I will be able to encounter and learn in my future visits throughout this next semester.
I think what you all are doing here is an awesome thing. My grandfather is in a similar facility back home. It is refreshing to see that others can look at these people and remember that they are... well... actual people! Too often they are written off because of their condition. Your section of the video where you talk about discussing when they were you all's ages is heart warming. It serves as a strong reminder that we are all on the same journey in the end. We make all take different paths, but no matter our condition, we are all experiencing those milestones of life. I was just wondering if there are other patients involved with the program that suffer something other than dementia?
That's actually a great part about facility, every one there is suffering from some form of dementia. Because of this, the activities are able to be geared towards encouraging them in times when they feel defeated because they can't remember things. Also, to see the friendships formed between the patients is incredible, and they sometimes even joke around with each other about not remembering something. As strange as it may seem, to see them be able to have fun even in a otherwise consistently hard time is so encouraging as a volunteer.
