Here is the link to my Video Reflection 2
So far I have had a wonderful time volunteering at Best Friends. I love working with the people there and doing what I can to make them happy and to help them has been such a rewarding experience. I look forward to going back each time.
Sounds like the people you are helping are really appreciative! Do the participants get a lot of visitors outside of the volunteers? What insights about dementia as an illness have you gained? Let me know!
ReplyDeleteI've noticed that most of the participants who have later stages of dementia get more visits from family members. It's actually really sweet watching these visits because you can tell how surprised they are and how much it means to them to get a visit from their families. To answer your question, I've noticed that dementia can be hard to notice. There's a man at Best Friends that I didn't think was a participant initially. I talked to him for 30 minutes before I noticed any hiccups in his behavior. I've also seen the really heartbreaking side of dementia, and this is hard for me to watch sometimes. I feel really good about the work that my group does at Best Friends and I thoroughly enjoy dedicating my time to these people.
